DJ JAZZY JEFF, JON BELLION, THE ROOTS & MORE DOES TRIBUTE MIXES FOR ‘SLUM VILLAGE’ MEMBER, J DILLA!! #TBT
James Dewitt Yancey, better known as J Dilla or Jay Dee, was a mid-1990’s record producer and rapper from one of the biggest underground hip hop groups coming out of Detroit, Michigan named ‘Slum Village‘.
According to many entertainers who’ve worked with J Dilla has said that he was one of music industry’s most influential hip hop contributors who’ve always spoke his truth no matter what!!
Through all of the many years of his hard work and musical contribution, J Dilla passed away back in 2006 of the blood disease, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura.
While the world had the pleasure of getting to know Dilla, entertainers such as Common, Questlove, MF DOOM, Dwele, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, and many more had the real pleasure of working with him.
We scoured the internet and found comments from DJ Premier and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
DJ Premier spoke with Ambrosia For Heads and listed some of his favorite J Dilla beats, which is “Players”, “Body Movin”, E=MC2″, WorkinOnIt”, “Drop”, “Runnin”, “Love”, “Love Jones”, and “One For Ghost”.
DJ Jazzy Jeff recalls Dilla, “What separated Jay was that he was uninhibited in his knowledge of music, and he was uninhibited when it came to making his music. A lot of producers say they are, but a lot of us are ‘industrialized’ as I like to call it, meaning we’re slaves to an industry, even when we don’t realize it. We have to do something that radio will find credible, or the hip-hop community is going to understand. When radio was a freer space and played music that people liked instead of what people paid for, the music that we heard was created by somebody in their basement being a mad scientist. Jay is a throwback to that time. He’s the guy in the basement.”
