Netflix’s ‘The Get Down’ is back and is said to be just as good if not better than the part 1!!
If you don’t know what The Get Down is, it’s an American musical drama series that’s set out in the South Bronx, better known as the Boogie Down Bronx. Created by Australian film director/producer ‘Baz’ Luhrmann and American play and screenwriter/director Stephen Guirgis, the first six episodes showed some of the best of the best disco and R&B records from back in the 70/80’s, which aired back in Aug of 2016.
From rhyming, scratching, and just chasing your dreams, the lively actors/fresh faces, the music and of course all of the memories you get from listening to a track, automatically gets you into the story-line.
Once the episodes hit the streaming service, Netflix, the people were ecstatic and a little confused. So lets lessen some of that confusion for you, lol.
Below are a few of the stars and a little bit about them:
Justice Smith, who plays Ezekiel “Zeke” Figuero, is a smart untapped talented rapper who is in love with a character by the name of ‘Mylene’.
Shameik Moore (previously from the movie ‘Dope’), plays as “Shaolin Fantastic” an unpredictable, thrill-seeker who has a passion for being a DJ. He and Zeke are like a double act, DJ/Emcee duo.
Herizen F. Guardiola, who plays Mylene Cruz, a determined young girl with an incredible voice that has dreams of becoming the next big disco superstar. She also loves Zeke but is afraid he may never get out of the Bronx.
Jaden Smith (previous movies, “After Earth”, “The Karate Kid”, “The Pursuit of Happiness”) who plays Marcus ‘Dizzee’ Kipling, the artistic graffiti artist (tags as Rumi 411).
Skylan Brooks, (previous movies “Seven Pounds”, “Southpaw”, etc.) who plays Ra-Ra Kipling, the loyal friend and protective brother of Dizzee. He is also known as the voice or reason for the crew.
T.J. Brown Jr. as Boo-Boo Kipling, brother of the Kiplings and the irresponsible 40 year old that acts like he is 14.
Qaasim Middleton, who plays DJ Big Planet, a member of ‘The Herculoids’ crew who hates The Get Down Brothers.
Eric D Hill Jr, who plays legendary DJ Kool Herc, the Hip Hop originator from back in the 1970s, and mentor to the members of ‘The Herculoids’.
Mamoudou Athie, who plays another legend Grandmaster Flash, a musician, DJ, and pioneer of hip hop DJing, cutting, and mixing. He was a mentor for The Get Down Brothers.
DJ Zeke, Netflix / Apple Beats DJ and Red Bulls NY Champion, seems to be the mentor for Shameik Moore for DJing. Take a look at DJ Zeke at The Get Down premier party Wednesday night.
