Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Clive Campbell aka DJ Kool Herc got his start at the age of 12 years old when he became a member of the graffiti crew the “Ex-Vandals“, which is were he got his name “Kool Herc”, Herc coming from Hercules because he’s 6′ 4″.
In the building which would now be known as the iconic “birthplace of hip hop”, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue (Sedgwick & Cedar) in the South Bronx, Herc began to DJ parties with his sister Cindy. He eventually pioneered what is known as the “break beat“, the break beat is where he would isolate the instrumental portion of the record, which emphasized the drum beat—the “break”—and switch from one break to another. He would use two turntables set ups, and use two copies of the same record to elongate the break.
Having much influence on DJs we would describe today as GREAT, Afrika Bambaataa, Grandmaster Flash, Sugarhill Gang, Funk Flex, and many more.
