JERMAINE DUPRI TAKS WITH PEOPLE MAGAZINE ABOUT WHY HE’S SO HONORED TO RECEIVE GLOBAL SPIN’S “BREAKING BARRIERS AWARD”!!
Atlanta’s legendary Grammy-winning record producer and CEO/Founder of SoSoDef record label, Jermaine Dupri received the opportunity to interview with PEOPLE Magazine about staying relevant in the music industry, working with some of the greatest musicians of all time, Janet Jackson, receiving the honor of “Breaking Barriers Award” at this years Global Spin Awards, which will be airing February 22nd on REVOLT TV.
Jermaine reminiscences on how as a child he would ask Santa for turntables for Christmas, “Wanting to be a deejay, learning how to deejay and then becoming the producer that people know.” from PEOPLE magazine.
He explains how honored he is to be receiving the “Breaking Barriers Award”, which just last year legendary DJ Spinderella was receiving the same award. “I’m probably most excited about this award because it pretty much [defines] my existence as a producer,” Dupri, 45, tells PEOPLE. “This award feels like, for me, exactly who I am and that’s why I’m so excited about it.”
Jermaine has created hit records with/for people like Usher, TLC, Xscape, Ludacris, Bowwow, Destiny’s Child, and of course Mariah Carey. JD (along with Johnta Austin and Manuel Seal) created one of his biggest records of 00’s with Mariah’s 2005 record “We Belong Together“.
“You have to freeze yourself to enjoy a moment like that because it’s a once in a lifetime type of thing,” he says. “I remember doing interviews back when this happened and I would go to places and tell them I just released the song of the decade…That was something that just makes you think a bunch of different ways – that you’re invincible, unstoppable.”
When fans think of JD in a relationship, we all reference his 7 year relationship with superstar singer Janet Jackson. Even thought he broke up back in 2009, Dupri was recently seen together at the afterparty for the last show of her State of the World Tour last month.
JD then expresses the first hand reactions of her fans when he seen her perform.
“The reaction [at the show] I saw was people really going crazy. You know, when me and Janet were together, I was on the road with her a lot, but I didn’t see that same reaction [back then].”
