This past Sunday after complications in surgery, legendary DJ on KKJZ Helen Borgers dies at 60 years old.
Breaking through soft jazz, Borgers worked at the Long Beach radio station for well over four decades, but was eventually laid off this past June.
After being laid off, she had to undergo surgery after being hospitalized.
Helen’s best friend from junior high Brooke Wharton, described her as “too cool for school” and how at the age of 12 years old her parents built her a “meditation room” where she listened to Ella Fitzgerald, Mose Allison, Oscar Peterson and other jazz musicians. While her older brother Ken Borgers talk about her love for the famous Hamlet play writer Shakespeare.
Her love of the Williams Shakespeare, the famous poet, playwriter, and actor led her to Long Beach Shakespeare Company, where she was the artistic director back in 1997.
Helen is survived by her siblings, Carol Roland, Dave and Ken Borgers and partner, Cannon Coccellato.
